What are ornamental maiden trees?
Ornamental maiden trees are young nursery trees still in an early stage of development. They normally have a straight stem and are carefully selected for vigour, health and form. From that sturdy basis they can grow on into full ornamental trees that give structure, height and presence to a garden or a landscape.
Brevart specialises in growing and grafting avenue and ornamental maiden trees with a girth of 6/8 to 14/16 cm. Our trees are of excellent quality, starting from a strong, finely branched root system and a healthy stem.
The sandy soil of Wetteren plays its part
The young trees are planted in the nutrient-rich, light sandy soil of Wetteren Ten-ede, which brings about the sound development of a very strong and finely branched root system. That sturdy root system guarantees quick re-establishment after transplanting.
Cultivation starts with carefully selected cuttings. At every growth stage the young trees are closely monitored and tended.
From cutting or seedling to maiden tree, in four steps
Every growth stage gets the attention it needs, by hand, year after year.
Cultivation starts with carefully selected cuttings and seedlings, planted in the light, nutrient-rich sandy soil.
The desired cultivar is combined by grafting or budding with the rootstock of a vigorous, compatible species.
Targeted pruning and staking produce a straight, sturdy stem with a well-balanced branch structure.
Closely monitored until the tree is ready for growing on or for its final position.
Grafting: the heart of the nursery
Brevart Tree Nursery specialises in grafting maiden trees. In this particular technique the desired species or cultivar is combined with the rootstock of a compatible, vigorous species, usually by grafting or budding. The tree is then grown on into a straight, strong avenue or ornamental tree.
We carry out both ground-level grafting and top grafting for half-standard and standard trees. That is how we obtain the distinctive characteristics of each species or cultivar.
The trees are thus thoroughly prepared to be grown on, or to be planted later in their final position.
